Clipping Path
A clipping path is a hand-drawn vector outline used in Photoshop to mask a product from its background — the traditional manual technique for catalog-grade jewelry cutouts. AI background removal does the same job in seconds without a retoucher tracing the edge by hand.
What is a clipping path?
A clipping path is a vector shape drawn in Photoshop (or a similar tool) that follows the exact silhouette of a product. The path is then used as a mask to isolate the product from its background — the foundational technique for any pure-white catalog photo. For jewelry, the path has to follow thin chains, prong tips, openwork cutouts, and decorative edges, which is why traditional clipping-path services charge per-image and turn around in 24-72 hours.
What AI replaces and what it doesn't
AI background removal does the silhouette extraction in seconds. For ~95% of jewelry photos — rings, earrings, pendants, watches with simple silhouettes — AI is now indistinguishable from a hand-drawn path. The remaining 5% are pieces where AI struggles: very thin chains shot against busy backgrounds (where individual links can be confused with noise), open filigree work where the AI can't tell which holes are jewelry and which are background, and pieces photographed against a similar-color surface (white-on-white, gold-on-tan).
Cost and turnaround comparison
Traditional clipping-path services for jewelry cost $1.50-5 per image, with 24-48h turnaround. AI background removal costs ~$0.10-0.90 per image (bundled into a credit pack), turnaround under 30 seconds. For a 200-SKU catalog drop, that's $300-1,000 + 1-2 days vs $20-180 + 30 minutes. The economics make AI the practical default; clipping-path services are now a high-touch fallback for the difficult 5% — typically used by luxury brands shooting hero campaign images where every pixel matters and the budget for hand-finishing is already in the schedule.
