Clipping Path
A vector outline drawn around an object to define its edges precisely. Used to separate jewelry from backgrounds with precise accuracy, especially for complex shapes like chains and filigree.
What is a clipping path?
A clipping path is a vector outline drawn in image-editing software and used as a mask to separate a product from its background. It is one way to prepare a cutout or controlled-background asset. Jewelry paths may need to follow thin chains, prong tips, openwork, transparent boundaries, and decorative edges, so the required manual effort depends on the source and intended output.
What AI replaces and what it doesn't
AI background removal does the silhouette extraction in seconds. For ~95% of jewelry photos — rings, earrings, pendants, watches with simple silhouettes — AI is now indistinguishable from a hand-drawn path. The remaining 5% are pieces where AI struggles: very thin chains shot against busy backgrounds (where individual links can be confused with noise), open filigree work where the AI can't tell which holes are jewelry and which are background, and pieces photographed against a similar-color surface (white-on-white, gold-on-tan).
Cost and turnaround comparison
Traditional clipping-path services for jewelry cost $1.50-5 per image, with 24-48h turnaround. AI background removal is bundled into the same credit-pack workflow with included first previews and turnaround under 30 seconds. The economics make AI the practical default; clipping-path services are now a high-touch fallback for the difficult 5% — typically used by luxury brands shooting hero campaign images where every pixel matters and the budget for hand-finishing is already in the schedule.
