Reference-Based Styling

Reference-based styling uses one example photo as a style guide for an AI to match — lighting, angle, background, color palette — across an entire jewelry catalog, so every product image looks like it came from the same studio session.

What is reference-based styling?

Reference-based styling is a technique where you upload one image as the visual standard, and the AI applies that standard to every other product image. The reference defines lighting (hard or soft, warm or cool), camera angle, background (white, beige, gradient, lifestyle), and color palette. The AI then transforms each input photo to match, while keeping the input's actual jewelry design intact. The result is a catalog where 200 different rings all look like they were photographed in the same 30-minute session.

Why catalog consistency matters

Inconsistent product photography is the single biggest reason e-commerce jewelry stores look amateur. When every photo has a different background tint, lighting angle, and shadow softness, the catalog reads as "a few different sellers reselling random stock" rather than a curated brand. Marketplaces (Etsy, Amazon, Shopify) also penalize visual inconsistency in their relevance/quality scoring. Studio reshoots fix this but cost thousands. Reference-based AI fixes it for cents per image with the same end-state visual.

How is it different from a filter or preset?

A Lightroom preset or Instagram filter applies the same color/tone curve to every photo. That works for matching color but does nothing about backgrounds, angles, lighting direction, or composition. Reference-based AI generates the output — it can replace the background, normalize the camera angle (from a slight tilt to dead-on), match the lighting direction even if the original was lit from the wrong side, and preserve the jewelry design through all of that. It's a regenerator, not a filter.

Practical workflow

Pick your hero shot — the one ring/necklace/earring image that already looks great. Upload it as the reference. Then upload each other product photo as input. The AI returns each one styled to match the reference. For a 50-SKU drop, the whole catalog can be processed in under an hour. The hero shot itself can be one you took with care, or a reference image from elsewhere — the AI doesn't reuse the reference's jewelry, only its photographic style.
